When Exactness Makes People Uneasy: Jasper Clarke’s New Still Life

Jasper Clarke is a self-taught artist who loves drawing everyday objects with quiet, careful attention. His new piece, “Still Life nr. 35” shows a cup, a bottle, and stacked boxes arranged in a calm, balanced setup. Clarke’s goal is simple: to show how ordinary things can hold a quiet beauty.

Critics, however, aren’t convinced. They say the work is too straightforward, too close to simple observation, and that it doesn’t offer enough room for ideas or imagination. For them, Clarke’s realism raises uncomfortable questions about what people expect from contemporary art.
